Ragdoll Games

Characters with no muscles and no dignity, falling over exactly as physics demands.

36 games Β· hand-picked, then filled from the catalogue

A ragdoll is a character with joints and weight but no idea how to stand up, and a ragdoll game is what happens when you put that character in charge of something difficult.

How this list is put together

Everywhere else in games, a body is animated: someone drew the walk cycle, and the character plays it back whatever happens. A ragdoll has no such instructions. It is a small skeleton of hinges with mass hanging off each one, and every frame the engine asks the same question β€” given where these limbs are and what just hit them, where does everything end up now? Nobody drew the answer. That is why you can play one of these for an hour and still see a collapse you have not seen before.

The controls are usually deliberately terrible, and that is not laziness. Give the player precise control and the physics become a tool; take it away and they become a comedian. You press the button meaning to throw a punch, the whole torso rotates, the legs follow half a second late, and the result is somewhere between what you intended and what the simulation felt like doing.

We put the two-player ones first, because a ragdoll falling over is funny and a ragdoll falling over while someone sitting next to you laughs is considerably funnier. Underneath them is everything else in the catalogue running on real physics rather than canned animation.

Questions people ask

What makes a game a ragdoll game?

The character has no animation telling it how to stand. It is a chain of joints with weight and gravity, so every fall, stumble and collision is calculated on the spot rather than played back from a file. That is why the same mistake never looks quite the same twice.

Are they meant to be this hard to control?

Yes. If the controls were precise the physics would stop being funny. The gap between what you meant to do and what the body actually did is the entire game.

Can two people play?

Several of these are built for two on one keyboard β€” Ragdoll Arena and the Drunken series in particular. They are also listed in our two players on one keyboard collection.
