How this list is put together

The carved lantern comes from Ireland and Scotland, where people hollowed out turnips and swedes, cut a face into them and put an ember inside to carry on Hallowe'en night. Turnips are dense, small and miserable to carve — anyone who has tried will tell you it is closer to woodwork than to art. When the tradition crossed the Atlantic it met the pumpkin: native, everywhere, enormous, and soft enough to open with a kitchen knife. The pumpkin won on ergonomics, not on symbolism.

That is a fair description of what happened to the games too. The thing kept the name and changed almost everything else.

What the tag actually holds

Worth counting before you assume, because the assumption is usually wrong.

One hundred and sixty-six games carry the Halloween tag in this catalogue. Fifteen of them also carry a horror or scary tag. The rest divide up roughly like this: fifty-five are match-three, jigsaw and puzzle games with pumpkins and bats in them; forty-four are costume, makeup and cooking games; thirty-six are explicitly aimed at small children.

So Halloween on a browser games portal is not a horror holiday. It is a costume holiday, and the games reflect the door-knocking, sweets-in-a-bucket, dressing-up version of the night rather than the frightening one.

This matters in both directions. If you came here with a nine-year-old, you are almost certainly fine, and the small number of exceptions announce themselves in their titles. If you came here wanting to be scared, this is the wrong page — there is a horror shelf and it is much better at that job.

The re-skin question

You will notice quickly that some of these are ordinary games wearing a hat.

That is not automatically bad. Moto X3M Halloween is Moto X3M with tombstones, and Moto X3M is a genuinely good physics game, so the Halloween version is a genuinely good physics game with tombstones. The seasonal coat costs you nothing.

What to watch for is the other kind: a thin game that hopes the pumpkins will do the work. The tell is the first thirty seconds — if there is no mechanic underneath the decoration, there was never going to be one.

The four at the top

A pumpkin match game that gets properly hard, the Halloween cut of a physics bike series that is worth playing at any time of year, a small vampire game, and a costume game that is exactly what it says. Behind them the whole tag, unfiltered — we are not hiding the dark handful, we are telling you it is small.

Questions people ask

Are these scary?

Mostly not, and that surprises people. Of the one hundred and sixty-six games tagged Halloween here, fifteen also carry a horror or scary tag. Fifty-five are match-three and puzzle games with pumpkins in them, forty-four are costume, makeup and cooking games, and thirty-six are aimed at young children. If you want frightening, the horror shelf is the one you want, not this one.

Which ones are safe for a seven-year-old?

Most of this page, honestly — the pumpkin-themed puzzles, the colouring, the costume games and the trick-or-treat runs are all made for children. What to avoid is anything with zombie or survival in the title, which is where the fifteen genuinely dark ones live.

Why do Halloween games exist all year?

Because nothing here knows what date it is. A browser game is published once and stays published; there is no seasonal switch, no calendar, no server deciding it is October. That is why you can play a Halloween game in June, and why a good Halloween game is just a good game with pumpkins on.

Do they work on a phone?

Many do, and we mark which. This is one of the better-served genres on touch, because so much of it is puzzle, dress-up and colouring — all of which are tapping and dragging rather than aiming.
