Block and Craft Games

One hundred and ninety-two games have "craft" in the title. Sixty-five of them are about shooting people. These are the other kind.

48 games Β· hand-picked, then filled from the catalogue

The word has been worn smooth. "Craft" in a browser game title used to mean recipes; now it mostly means the blocks are cubes.

How this list is put together

Here is the measurement, taken from this catalogue rather than from an opinion. One hundred and ninety-two active games have craft in the title. Sixty-five of their descriptions mention shooting, guns or killing. Three mention a recipe. The suffix has become a visual style tag β€” pixel textures, cube geometry, a blocky character β€” attached to whatever genre the developer was actually building.

That is not a scandal, it is just a naming convention, and it makes the shelf unusable unless somebody sorts it. So this page is sorted: the games tagged as shooters are excluded from the grid below. If you want those, they are a legitimate genre and they have their own page.

What is left, and what it is good for

Three things, roughly.

Sandbox worlds β€” you get terrain, a block palette and no instructions. These are the closest to the original idea and the slowest to get going; the first ten minutes are always dull and the payoff is entirely in what you decide to make. Best on a desktop with a real mouse, because placing a block precisely is a pointing task.

Parkour and obstacle runs β€” a block world used as level geometry rather than as material. You are not building anything; you are jumping across it against a clock. These are the ones that work on a phone, because the input is two buttons.

Mining and progression loops β€” dig, collect, upgrade, dig faster. Structurally these are idle games wearing a pickaxe, and they are the most immediately satisfying of the three for exactly that reason.

The thing browser versions cannot copy

Not the graphics β€” those are easy, and cubes are the cheapest possible geometry.

What does not survive the move to a page is persistence at scale. The game these are all descended from is interesting because the world is enormous, it remembers everything you did to it, and it is still there next month. A browser world is held in your own device's storage, has to load in a few seconds over an ordinary connection, and vanishes the day you clear your site data.

So the browser versions optimise for the first twenty minutes instead, which is a legitimate design decision and worth knowing before you judge one for being shallow. It is not trying to be a world you live in. It is trying to be the good part of the first afternoon.

The four at the top

A faithful sandbox remake, a multiplayer block world where other people are digging in the same map, a 2D side-view take that fits the whole idea onto one screen, and a parkour course made of blocks. Behind them the catalogue fills in from the block and sandbox tags β€” three hundred and forty-five games carry the tag β€” with the gunfights taken out.

Questions people ask

Is this actual Minecraft?

No, and nothing on the web is. Minecraft is a paid game from Mojang that runs as an installed application. What the browser has is a genre that grew around it β€” block worlds you can mine and build in, running on a page. Some are close, most take one idea and leave the rest.

Which of these lets me actually build?

Look for sandbox or survival in the description rather than for the word craft, which by now means almost nothing. Of the games here with craft in the title, sixty-five describe shooting, killing or guns and three mention a recipe. The grid on this page has the shooters filtered out.

Do these save my world?

Some do, in your browser's own storage, which means the world lives on that device in that browser and disappears if you clear your site data. None of them has an account, so nothing follows you to another machine. Treat a browser world as something you build for an afternoon.

Is there a crafting grid?

Almost never, and that is the single biggest gap between these and the game they are imitating. The 3Γ—3 recipe table is what the word craft refers to. Most browser versions give you a block palette and a world to put it in, which is building, not crafting.
