About Stock Car Hero

Nearly every browser racing game hands you a throttle you have to think about. Stock Car Hero takes it away. Half a second after the start the car goes to full power on its own and stays there until the flag, which leaves you exactly two things to manage: where the car is on the road, and whose air you are sitting in. On an oval, that is not a simplification. That is the sport.

The mechanic that carries the whole game is the draft. Every rival trails a wake of invisible markers behind it, and when your nose crosses one, your car gets a temporary shove of extra acceleration. Sit in that wake and you are quicker than the car creating it, which is the only reliable way to climb an eighteen-car field when everybody's engine is pinned. Lose it โ€” by drifting a car's width off line, or by bumping the car in front โ€” and you have to start the hunt over. Contact does not just slow you down: it cancels your boost and snaps your steering back to centre.

Around that sits a four-race series: Daytona, Troy, Talladega, Sonoma, in that order, Easy to Expert. Seventeen rivals share the track, and two of them run flat out for the entire race no matter what you do. You score points for where you finish, the game keeps a total out of 160 and a personal best, and every race pays coins that go into four upgrade bars.

It was built by b10b, a Canadian indie studio on Vancouver Island, and it is the oldest of their Hero series โ€” it appeared on b10b.com in June 2018, more than two years before Superbike Hero. It is also the most played. On Poki alone it holds 4.41 out of 5 from 212,216 votes.

Two of the four tracks are ovals, and the game will not let you turn right on them

This is what makes Daytona and Talladega feel unlike Troy and Sonoma. The game marks those two rounds as bowls, and when a track is a bowl the generator throws away its normal deck of corner pieces and builds the lap from left-hand curves and straights only. A right-hander cannot appear. It also banks the horizon, fills the infield with colour and lines the rim with floodlights. That is not a stylistic choice โ€” it is how the real tracks work.

  • Daytona International Speedway, Florida is a 2.5-mile tri-oval with 31 degrees of banking in the turns. It is the round the game rates Easy, and in real life it is where the NASCAR season opens.
  • Talladega Superspeedway, Alabama is 2.66 miles, the longest oval in NASCAR, with 33 degrees of banking โ€” steeper than Daytona, which is exactly why it produces the biggest packs and the biggest crashes. The game rates it Hard and gives it no trees at all, which is what a superspeedway rim actually looks like.
  • Sonoma Raceway, California is the exception. It is a 1.99-mile road course with twelve turns and about 160 feet of elevation change, and it has right-handers. The game gives Sonoma the highest hill setting of the four tracks and a corner pool that is 30 per cent right turns. It rates it Expert, which is fair: it is the only round where the reflex you built over three races is the wrong one.
  • Troy, Ohio is the odd one out and worth being straight about. Daytona, Talladega and Sonoma are real NASCAR venues; Troy has no famous circuit. In the game it is a wooded, hilly, mixed-direction layout โ€” a stand-in for the American short-track scene rather than a specific place.

Why do ovals run counterclockwise at all? The habit came from horse racing. American horse tracks run left-handed, and when the first automobile oval races were held in the 1890s they simply copied the direction the horses already ran. It stuck, and it turned out to have a practical side: the driver sits on the left, so turning left keeps them further from the outside wall and gives them a better view of what is coming.

What a stock car actually is

The name is a fossil. In 1949, NASCAR launched a division called Strictly Stock, and it meant what it said: American passenger cars, 1946 or newer, raced essentially as they left the showroom. The differences between a race car and the same model in a driveway came down to covering the headlights, strapping the doors shut, removing the exhaust and bolting in a seatbelt. The first race, at Charlotte Speedway, put 33 cars from nine different manufacturers on the grid โ€” Buick, Cadillac, Chrysler, Hudson, Ford, Kaiser, Lincoln, Mercury and Oldsmobile.

The point was credibility. If the car that won on Sunday was the car in the dealership on Monday, the racing meant something.

Today's Cup cars are purpose-built tube-frame machines wearing a manufacturer's silhouette, so "stock" is now a historical label rather than a description. But the original idea survives in this game's structure: you do not pick a car. There is exactly one player car in the build, and everything you spend at the garage goes into making that one car better.

Where the coins go: 100, 300, 600, 1200

The garage has four bars and each takes four levels, priced 100, then 300, then 600, then 1200. Filling one bar costs 2,200 coins; filling all four costs 8,800. Against a starting balance of 500, 20 coins per pickup and 400 for a race win, that is several series of work โ€” so the buying order decides how your career goes.

Upgrade What it changes across four levels Buy it
Grip Steering response from 0.9 to 1.1 โ€” a 22 per cent swing First. It is what keeps you on the road.
Boost How slowly your boost and draft bleed away Second โ€” it makes every overtake cheaper
Acceleration From 0.95 to 1.25, the biggest single jump in the game Third, for recovering from mistakes
Top speed From 0.85 to 1.0 of the car's ceiling โ€” 17.6 per cent Last

Top speed is the tempting one, because a bigger number sounds like a faster car. It is the wrong first purchase. With the throttle already pinned and seventeen rivals to thread through, your lap time is lost in the corners and in the seconds you spend out of the draft โ€” and Grip and Boost are the two upgrades that buy those back.

b10b built a run of these: the same lightweight 3D, the same one-mechanic discipline, the same instant load. Superbike Hero is the closest relative โ€” same automatic throttle, same coins-and-upgrades loop, but four real World Superbike circuits instead of ovals. Grand Prix Hero swaps the stock car for an open-wheel machine. Away from racing, Tennis Hero and Athletics Hero apply the same idea to a serve and to a javelin.

How to play Stock Car Hero

  1. Start at Daytona. The series runs in a fixed order and the corners get sharper as you go. The last round's turns are two and a half times tighter than the first round's โ€” that scaling is written into the track generator, not into the AI.
  2. Steer, and only steer. Left and right arrows, A and D, a held finger, or a tilted phone. No throttle to manage.
  3. Hunt the wake. Line up directly behind a rival and hold there. The draft feeds you acceleration for as long as you stay in it.
  4. Take the arrows. Yellow boost arrows sit roughly once every 128 track sections โ€” about six a lap โ€” and they push you past your normal top speed, to 110 per cent of it.
  5. Spend at the garage. Four bars, four levels each, between every race.

Six things worth knowing before your first race:

  • There are no coins on track during your first series. The game only starts scattering them from series two. Your first championship runs on the 500 coins you start with plus race payouts, so expect the opening four races to feel poor.
  • Winning pays disproportionately. First is 40 points, second is 35, and from there it drops by exactly one point per position. The coin payout is ten times your points, so a win is worth 400 coins and last place 190. The gap between first and second is bigger than the gap between second and eleventh.
  • The grass costs you half your speed. Run wide and the car bleeds down to fifty per cent of its top speed before it stops decelerating. Nothing you gain by cutting a corner comes close.
  • Never touch another car. A collision drops you to the other driver's speed, kills any boost you were carrying and zeroes your steering for a moment. Overtake with air between you.
  • Buy Grip first. Steering response climbs from 0.9 to 1.1 across its four levels, a 22 per cent swing, and it prevents the mistakes the other three upgrades cannot pay for.
  • Upgrading makes the field faster. Rival pace is calculated partly from how complete your own car is. Honest rubber-banding, but it means a maxed car never turns the last round into a formality.

Features

  • A four-race series across Daytona, Troy, Talladega and Sonoma, rising from Easy to Expert
  • Seventeen rivals on track, two of whom run flat out every single lap
  • An automatic throttle, so every place you gain comes from steering and from the draft
  • Four upgrades โ€” Top speed, Grip, Acceleration and Boost โ€” at 100, 300, 600 and 1200 coins a level
  • Points by finishing position, 40 for a win and 160 for a perfect series, with a saved personal best
  • Finish the four races and the series restarts with a quicker field, so the career never actually ends
  • One HTML5 page, no download and no account, which is why it runs on a locked-down school Chromebook

FAQ

How do you play Stock Car Hero?

You only steer. The car applies its own throttle half a second after the lights go out and never lifts, so the arrow keys, A and D, a held finger or a tilted phone are the whole control scheme. Stay on the tarmac, sit in the turbulent air behind a rival to pick up the draft, and drive over the yellow arrows for a burst above your normal top speed.

What tracks are in Stock Car Hero?

Four, always raced in the same order โ€” Daytona in Florida (Easy), Troy in Ohio (Medium), Talladega in Alabama (Hard) and Sonoma in California (Expert). Daytona and Talladega are built as ovals with banked corners, Troy is a wooded country layout and Sonoma is the hilly road course.

Why does the game only turn left at Daytona and Talladega?

Because both are ovals, and American ovals run counterclockwise. The game builds those two rounds from a pool of left-hand and straight sections only, so a right-hand corner cannot appear there. Troy and Sonoma use a mixed pool and do give you right-handers.

What should I upgrade first in Stock Car Hero?

Grip. It is the only upgrade that keeps you off the grass, and running wide drops you to half your top speed, which costs far more than any single upgrade gives back. Grip, then Boost, then Acceleration, and Top speed last.

How much do upgrades cost?

Each of the four bars has four levels, priced 100, 300, 600 and 1200 coins. That is 2,200 coins to fill one bar and 8,800 to fill all four. You start with 500 coins, each coin on track is worth 20, and finishing a race pays ten coins per point scored.

Why are there no coins on the track in my first series?

The game only scatters coins from the second series onward. Your first four races are funded entirely by the 500 coins you start with and by the race payouts, which is why the first championship feels tight and the second one does not.

What is a stock car?

A stock car was originally a showroom car raced almost as sold. NASCAR's 1949 Strictly Stock division used ordinary American passenger cars with the headlights covered, the doors strapped shut and the exhaust removed. Modern Cup cars are purpose-built underneath, so the name is now historical rather than literal.

Is Stock Car Hero free, and does it work at school?

Yes. It is one HTML5 page with no download, no plugin and no account, so it loads on a school Chromebook the same way it loads anywhere else. It is funded by short ads before the game and between screens.
