Match 3 Games
The genre that phones made famous, and only twelve of the ninety here are marked for a finger.
42 games · hand-picked, then filled from the catalogue
A match-3 board is a grid of coloured pieces, and the whole genre is built on a rule discovered by accident: when you clear three pieces, everything above them falls, and sometimes that lands another three in a row. The move you did not make is the one that feels best.
How this list is put together
Bejeweled, the game that fixed the formula in 2001, was a browser game before it was anything else. It ran in a window on a work computer. Then phones arrived, the genre became the most downloaded thing on earth, and it acquired the two features nobody asked for: a heart that refills in thirty minutes and a button that sells you more.
Nothing here takes your lives away
None of the ninety games on this page has an energy meter. Lose the board and you press again. That is not a design achievement — it is what the genre looked like before the phone — but it is the reason a browser match-3 can be played for eleven minutes on a break instead of for two.
Twelve out of ninety
Here is the odd part. This is the genre that touch screens made into an industry, and in this catalogue only twelve of the ninety are marked as working on a phone.
The explanation is dull and worth knowing: a browser match-3 gets built for a mouse, because the portals that pay for them are desktop portals, and dragging a gem with a cursor is the same gesture that Bejeweled shipped with in 2001. The genre went to the phone and the browser version stayed where it started. We label the twelve, because a match-3 on a laptop and a match-3 on a tablet are genuinely different games to hold.
The bottom of the board is where the points are
One tip that changes scores immediately: play low.
A match at the bottom of the grid drops every piece above it, and a full column of falling pieces is a lottery ticket for a chain you did not plan. The same match at the top clears three pieces and nothing else moves. Players who look for the prettiest match tend to play high; players who look for the biggest one play low and let gravity do the work.
For the neighbouring shapes of the same idea, the block puzzle games fill a grid instead of clearing one, and the memory games use the same board with a different rule.

What is a match 3 game?
A grid of coloured pieces where you swap two neighbours to line up three or more of a kind. They vanish, the board falls into the gap, and sometimes that makes another match on its own. The genre is named after the smallest number of pieces that counts.
Do these have lives or timers that lock you out?
No. That is the main practical difference between these and the phone versions of the same idea. Nothing here asks you to wait thirty minutes for a heart or to pay to continue — you lose, you press again.
Do they work on a phone?
Twelve of the ninety are marked for touch, which is strangely few for a genre a phone made famous. Most of these are built mouse-first. We label which is which on every card.
Do they save my progress?
Forty-eight of them keep your level or your best score in your own browser. It does not travel to another device and clearing your browsing data erases it.
Is there a trick to getting better?
Work from the bottom of the board. A match near the bottom drops everything above it and often sets off a chain you did not plan; the same match at the top changes almost nothing.
