Monster Games

Two different genres share the word. We have put the monsters here and sent the trucks to the driving shelf.

42 games · hand-picked, then filled from the catalogue

There are a hundred and eighty games in this catalogue with «monster» in the title, and they belong to two genres that have nothing to do with each other.

How this list is put together

Fifty-four of them are trucks. Monster truck racing is a real sport with its own rules, its own weight class and its own audience, and it has no more to do with creatures than a Formula One car has to do with formulas. We have sent them to driving games, where somebody looking for them will actually find them.

What is left — a hundred and twenty-eight games — is this page.

Catch it, merge it, or run

Catching. The oldest shape: creatures appear, you collect them, the collection is the score. Simple to build, which is why there are so many.

Merging. Two small monsters make one bigger monster, and the bigger one is worth more. This is the mechanic that took over casual games in the last few years and it is the most represented here. It works because the reward is always one move away.

Running. A monster chases you and the game is the distance. These are the ones with a thumbnail designed to look slightly frightening and a game that is not.

Nothing on this page is trying to scare you

We keep horror, blood and anything tagged scary off this list. That is not squeamishness; it is that «monster» in a browser catalogue mostly means a cartoon with teeth, and mixing in the jump-scare games would mislead a parent scrolling quickly.

The genuinely frightening ones have their own page, at horror games, and it says what it is.

They are heavier than the cartoons suggest

The median download here is 13.1 MB, against 7.8 MB for the catalogue as a whole. Round friendly creatures turn out to be 3D models, and 3D models cost megabytes — which is why only twenty-five of the hundred and twenty-eight run on a phone.

For the lighter end of the same feeling, the cat games are a fifth of the weight and roughly as many teeth.

Questions people ask

Are these scary?

Mostly no, and that is deliberate. We keep horror and blood off this page, so what is left is the cartoon end of the word: round creatures with too many eyes, things to catch, things to merge. If you want the frightening kind, the horror games collection is separate and labelled.

Where are the monster trucks?

On the driving shelf, where they belong. Fifty-four of the games with «monster» in the title are trucks, which is a different genre wearing the same word, and mixing them would make both pages worse.

What do you actually do in a monster game?

Three things, mostly: catch or collect them, merge them into bigger ones, or run away from one. The middle group is the newest and the most addictive, and it is the reason the genre keeps producing games.

Do they work on a phone?

Twenty-five of the hundred and twenty-eight are marked for touch, and we label which on every card.

Do I need an account?

No. Nothing on this page asks for one, and nothing downloads.
