Zombie Games

They are slow, they are stupid, and there are always more of them than bullets.

36 games Β· hand-picked, then filled from the catalogue

The zombie is the most useful enemy ever invented for a small game studio, and the reason is that it needs almost nothing.

How this list is put together

It has no tactics to write. It does not take cover, flank, or reconsider. It has one behaviour β€” walk towards the player β€” which costs almost nothing to build and, crucially, scales: a hundred of them is the same code as one. Everything the team saves on making the enemy clever goes into the part the player actually feels, which is the pressure of the number.

That is why the genre splits so cleanly into two shapes, and both are on this list. Survival games make it about space: you can always outrun them, so the question is whether the room you are backing into has another door. Defence games make it about money: you hold one position, you earn while you hold it, and every wave is a bet on whether to spend now on a better gun or save for the barricade.

Neither shape needs a large budget, which is why browser zombie games are unusually good compared with browser almost-anything-else. The constraint and the genre happen to fit.

Straightforwardly: this is not a collection for young children. If that is what you came for, safe games for kids is built on the opposite rule.

Questions people ask

Why are zombies in so many browser games?

Because they are the cheapest enemy a small team can build. A zombie needs no tactics, no dialogue and no pathfinding worth the name β€” it walks at you. That frees the whole budget for the part players actually notice, which is how it feels to hold them off.

Are these suitable for children?

Most are not. There are weapons and there is blood, and the difficulty curve assumes an older player. Our safe games for kids collection excludes everything on this page on purpose.

What is the difference between the survival ones and the defence ones?

In a survival game you move and the horde follows. In a defence game you hold a position and spend what you earn on holding it better. The first is about space, the second about money.
