About Offroad Mania
Nothing in Offroad Mania is trying to beat you to a line. Search every string in the build and the words TIME, BEST, RECORD, LAP and SCORE do not appear once โ no clock, no opponent, no leaderboard, no money. The display while you drive shows the course number and a small grey figure with a counter reading 0/3. That is the entire scoreboard.
What sits underneath is much less common. Each of the five trucks carries a torque curve read from its own settings file, a clutch, five forward gears and a reverse, a final drive, and three differentials โ front, centre and rear โ feeding all four wheels. The starter Jeep-alike peaks at 347 Nยทm at 4,300 rpm, revs to 7,000 and shifts up at 6,480, with a 3.93 first gear behind a 4.00 final drive. Its wheelbase measures 2.803 m, its track 1.760 m and its tyres 0.514 m in radius โ genuine 40-inch rubber. Each corner has 0.40 m of spring travel and uses less than half of it standing still.
All three differentials are open, and that single choice is what the game is about. Lift a wheel and it takes the torque with it; the tyre still pressing on rock gets almost nothing. Reading the telemetry on the first course, the Jeep spent ten seconds with both left wheels in the air, the engine at 4,000 rpm and the truck moving at 0.1 km/h. That is what an open diff does, and the whole design asks you to drive around it.
It is the work of one person: a developer from Belarus trading as Active Games, who built it in Armory3D โ the open-source engine that runs inside Blender โ compiled it through Kha and Haxe to WebGL with Bullet doing the physics, and wrote the soundtrack himself. It reached the web around 27 September 2019, arrived on GameMonetize that November, and went to Steam on 10 February 2020, where a longer version sits on Very Positive with 94% of 367 reviews.
The 120 courses are 60 courses driven twice
The level select goes to 120 and the last page ends on it. The build says otherwise: it holds scene files named Level1 to Level60 and nothing beyond. Ask the server for Level61 and it returns a 404.
The code does the rest in one line. Any level number above 60 flips a flag, subtracts 60, and loads that course with the start and finish markers swapped and the opening camera turned around. Course 109 loads Level49 backwards. The second half of the game is the first half in reverse, which works better than it sounds: a rock face you crawled up becomes a descent where the truck's own weight is the problem and the brake is the tool.
The reversal is not cosmetic. Each direction keeps its own record of which figurines you found, so the three on course 1 are not the three on course 61 โ 360 in total. The courses are hand-built and vary a lot in scale: 968 placed objects between them, from one with 8 to another with 28.
The five trucks, and why the one you unlock first is the worst of them
Every truck loads a small settings file before the menu appears. This is what they hold.
| Truck | Peak torque | Torque at 1,000 rpm | Redline | First ร final drive | Spring travel | Spring rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short-wheelbase 4x4 (start) | 347 Nยทm at 4,300 | 160 Nยทm | 7,000 | 15.7 | 0.40 m | 6,000 |
| Pickup (level 10) | 360 Nยทm at 4,200 | 300 Nยทm | 6,000 | 18.3 | 0.25 m | 10,000 |
| Wagon (level 20) | 325 Nยทm at 4,000 | 240 Nยทm | 6,500 | 12.7 | 0.34 m | 8,000 |
| Crawler pickup (level 30) | 460 Nยทm at 4,200 | 400 Nยทm | 6,000 | 18.3 | 0.60 m | 5,500 |
| Tube-frame buggy (level 40) | 597 Nยทm at 3,200 | 542 Nยทm | 6,000 | 13.6 | 0.80 m | 4,500 |
Read the last two columns first. The pickup handed to you at level 10 has 37% less suspension travel than the truck you started in and a spring two-thirds stiffer, so it skates over rocks the Jeep walked up. Its extra torque off idle helps on a steep smooth climb and is the wrong tool on broken ground. Nobody tells you this in the game.
The buggy at the end is the opposite of everything: softest springs, twice the starter's travel and 542 Nยทm at 1,000 rpm, three and a half times what the Jeep makes there. It crawls where the others bounce.
Why a real 4x4 has a solid axle and a very low first gear
The suspension here is declared as a beam axle front and rear โ one rigid tube with a wheel bolted to each end. Road cars abandoned that decades ago because independent suspension rides and handles better. Serious off-roaders kept it, for the reason you feel in this game: when one wheel of a beam axle climbs a rock, the axle tilts and pushes the opposite wheel down into the ground, where independent suspension would let it droop and unload. Articulation, off-road, means keeping tyres pressed into the dirt when the ground stops being flat, and a rigid axle does it by geometry rather than clever damping.
The gearing follows from the same problem. A crawl ratio is first gear times the final drive, and the trucks here run from 12.7 to 18.3; real rock crawlers go much further by adding a transfer case with its own reduction. The point is control, not speed: a low enough ratio idles a heavy truck up a step at walking pace and uses its own compression as a brake coming back down.
Which leaves the differentials. An open differential lets the outside wheel turn faster than the inside one through a corner, and it does that by always splitting torque equally. Equal is the trap. Lift one wheel and the torque it can absorb falls to nearly zero, so its partner receives nearly zero too. That is the classic way to strand a 4x4 with the engine roaring, and it is why vehicles built for this carry differential locks that force both wheels to turn together. Offroad Mania models the open diffs and gives you no lockers, so the answer has to come from your line and your right foot.
Playing Offroad Mania unblocked at school
There is nothing to install and no account to create โ the game is a single web page, and if the address loads, so does it. A filter on a school or office network blocks a domain, not a game, so this has nothing to do with the game and everything to do with which addresses your network allows. If this page is refused, ask a teacher whether it can be allowed, or play at home. Do not go looking for a way around the filter.
The thing worth planning for is your save. This game has 120 courses, 360 figurines and nine paint slots to remember, and it keeps all of it in the browser's own storage on the machine you are sitting at. There is no login and nothing is sent anywhere. A shared library computer, a guest session, or a browser set to clear site data at logout will hand the next person a blank game and give you one back, and moving from the school laptop to your own is a fresh start too. If the progress matters, do the run on one machine in one browser.
The developer left two keys in the build that help. Hold O and press L and every course unlocks at once, which is how you get back to where you were after a wipe. Hold K and press L and the save is cleared deliberately.
Two practical notes. It is keyboard only โ not a single touch control exists in the build, so a tablet is out. And there is a wait before the title screen: of the roughly 22.7 MB and 898 files the game is made of, 17.5 MB arrives before the menu appears, because the garage loads all five trucks and the driver whether or not you have unlocked them. Long on a shared connection the first time, instant afterwards.
More driving games
If the appeal is the physics rather than the speed, Russian Taz Driving 2 is the closest neighbour here: an old van, open ground and a suspension model that punishes the same mistakes. Cyber Truck Drive Simulator swaps rock for city. For the opposite of a crawl, Stock Car Hero and Grand Prix Hero are both built around the clock this game refuses to give you. The rest of the shelf is in the driving category.
How to play Offroad Mania
- Pick a truck, then a course. The garage shows one 4x4 at a time with the driver beside it. Four of the five say LOCKED with the level range you need underneath. PLAY opens ten pages of twelve courses.
- Touch the gas to begin. The truck waits at the line with the brake on and a control card on screen until you press W or the up arrow. Nothing is timing you, so read the ground first.
- Climb, do not charge. The key is on or off but the effect is not: the longer you hold it the further up the torque curve you go. Short presses keep the truck on the rock.
- Collect the three figurines if you want them. They stand on or beside the course, usually one obvious and two where the direct line does not go. The counter is bottom left.
- Touch the finish marker. The course ends there whatever state the truck is in โ nose down, on its roof, sliding backwards. R restarts and keeps the figurines you have.
Things worth knowing before the third course beats you:
- Holding the throttle from the line throws you off the map. Flat out from a standstill on course one, the Jeep upshifted to third, left the ground inside four seconds and never touched it again. All four wheels read zero contacts and there is no recovering. Pulse the key instead.
- When two wheels lift, stop pressing. With open diffs, more throttle only spins the airborne wheels faster. Release, let the suspension push the truck back onto four tyres, then feed power in gently.
- Keep the axles loaded, not level. One run showed three corners near their full 0.40 m of extension while the fourth was squashed to 0.10 m. That is fine โ a wheel deep in its travel is still gripping, a wheel hanging free is not.
- Reverse is a brake you can steer with. Hold S with the truck nearly stopped and it engages, which is the cheapest way to back off a ledge you have a wheel over.
- Use the cockpit view on ledges. C drops the camera onto the driver's head, where you can see where the front tyres actually are. The chase camera hides them behind the bonnet at the moment it matters. H clears the interface entirely, which no menu mentions.
Controls
| W / โ / Z | Throttle. The same key starts the level from the line โ the course does not begin until you touch the gas |
|---|---|
| S / โ | Brake. Held below walking pace with the truck stopped, it selects reverse |
| A / โ / Q | Steer left, up to 36 degrees of lock |
| D / โ | Steer right |
| C | Switch between the orbiting chase camera and a cockpit view mounted on the driver's head |
| R | Restart the course from the start line, keeping the secrets you already picked up |
| Esc | Pause |
| Left drag / right drag / middle drag | Swing the chase camera around the truck, pull it in or push it out, raise or lower it |
| H | Hide the whole interface, which is not listed on any menu |
Features
- 120 numbered courses that are really 60 hand-built ones, each unlocked a second time to be driven from the far end back to the start
- Three hidden figurines on every course in every direction โ 360 in total, tracked separately for each way round
- Five 4x4s unlocked at levels 10, 20, 30 and 40, from a short-wheelbase Jeep-alike to a tube-frame rock buggy with 0.8 m of spring travel
- A full drivetrain per truck โ torque curve, clutch, five gears plus reverse, final drive and three open differentials driving all four wheels
- [object Object]
- No timer, no lap counter, no rival and no currency โ the only things the game records are the highest course you reached and the figurines you found
- Progress is written straight into the browser rather than an account, so it travels with the machine and not with you

FAQ
How many levels does Offroad Mania have?
The menu lists 120 across ten pages of twelve, but the build only contains 60 course files. Levels 61 to 120 load those same 60 courses with the start and finish swapped, so you drive each one forwards and then backwards. Each direction has its own set of three hidden figurines.
How do you unlock the cars in Offroad Mania?
By reaching a level number, not by spending anything. The locked panel spells out the requirement โ complete levels 1 to 10 for the pickup, 10 to 20 for the wagon, 20 to 30 for the crawler pickup and 30 to 40 for the tube-frame buggy. There is no currency in the game at all.
What are the controls for Offroad Mania?
W or the up arrow is the throttle, S or the down arrow is the brake and reverse, and A and D or the left and right arrows steer. C changes camera, R restarts the course and Escape pauses. Z and Q are mapped alongside W and A for French keyboard layouts.
Why does Offroad Mania spin its wheels and go nowhere?
Because all three differentials in the game are open. When a wheel lifts off the ground it takes the engine's torque with it, and the wheel still touching rock receives almost none. Ease off, let the truck settle back onto all four tyres, then pick a line that keeps them loaded.
Who made Offroad Mania?
A solo developer from Belarus working as Active Games, who posts under the handle grmaster. He built it in Armory3D, the open-source game engine that runs inside Blender, and wrote the soundtrack himself. It reached the web around 27 September 2019 and Steam on 10 February 2020.
Is Offroad Mania a racing game?
No, despite where it gets filed. There is no opponent, no lap, no clock and no score anywhere in the build. A course is finished when the truck touches the finish marker, however long that takes, which makes it a rock-crawling puzzle rather than a race.
Does Offroad Mania work on a phone?
Not usefully. There are no touch controls in the build and every input is a keyboard key, so a phone or tablet gets you a menu and a truck you cannot drive. A laptop, desktop or Chromebook keyboard is required.
Is Offroad Mania free to play here?
Yes, in the browser, with no download, account or plugin. GameMonetize's player shows an advert before the title screen and the game itself asks for a banner when a course loads. Nothing interrupts you once a course has started.
