A wrecked room, a cloth, and the satisfaction of something being completely finished.

How this list is put together

It is probably the most underrated genre we host, and there are forty-three games here, chosen one at a time.

Why it works

Almost no video game lets you finish anything. There is always another level, another wave, another score. Cleaning is the exception: the room was dirty, now it is not, and you can see it.

The loop is short, the result is visual, and there is no way to lose. That is why it gets played in five-minute gaps, and why it has more in common with tidying a drawer than with competing.

car wash games is the largest specific cleaning term in English, and ten of these forty-three are car washes — hose, foam, brush, rinse, dry, and the shine at the end. It is a sub-genre of its own and it needs no explanation before you start.

The oddly specific ones are worth a line: ear cleaning, rug cleaning and dishwashing are all searched, and we have none of them. Nor is there a single hotel cleaning game, against 488 searches a month. These are real micro-genres and the feed simply has not produced them.

How the forty-three break down

what they are how many
house, room and dollhouse 18

tidying and sorting 4
beaches, streets, supermarket, clinic 9

Weight and phones

The median is 8.3 MB, barely above the catalogue's 7.8 MB. Cleaning is cheap to draw: a room that stays still and two layers of texture.

Eleven of the forty-three work on touch, one of the best ratios on the site. Scrubbing is a finger gesture before it is a mouse one — here the screen is not a compromise, it is the natural place for it.

Questions people ask

What is actually on this page?

Forty-three games. Eighteen are house and room — picking up, scrubbing, tidying — ten are car washes, two are ASMR cleaning, and the rest are beaches, streets, a supermarket and a clinic.

Why are cleaning games satisfying?

Because they end. Almost no genre lets you see a task completely finished: there is always another level. A clean room is a visible final state, and hardly anyone else offers that.

Are there car wash games?

Ten, and it is the single biggest slice. `car wash games` is searched 889 times a month in English, more than any other specific cleaning term.

Is there hotel cleaning, ear cleaning or rug cleaning?

No hotel ones at all, despite 488 searches a month. Ear cleaning and rug cleaning are searched too — 143 and 149 — and we have neither. They are oddly specific micro-genres and the feed has not caught up.

Do they work on a phone?

Eleven of the forty-three. Scrubbing is a finger gesture before it is a mouse one, so this is among the genres that translate best to a touchscreen.
