Shooter Games

Six hundred and ten games carry the shooter tag. Eight of them are first person, and there is a reason for that.

48 games Β· hand-picked, then filled from the catalogue

Every shooter is a game about one number: how long between deciding to hit something and hitting it.

How this list is put together

Movement, cover, weapon choice, recoil, spread β€” all of it exists to lengthen or shorten that gap. A shooter is well made when losing feels like your gap was too long, and badly made when it feels like the game measured it for you. That is the only test worth applying, and it works on a photoreal military sim and a stickman with a pistol equally.

The web has a specific reason for not being first person

Look at the tag counts here and something odd stands out. Six hundred and ten games carry the shooter tag. Eight also carry first person.

That is not taste, it is the platform. To take over your mouse β€” to make moving it turn your head instead of moving a cursor β€” a web page has to request pointer lock, and the browser treats that as a permission. It can only be asked for from a real click, the browser puts a notice on screen when it is granted, and pressing Escape gives the cursor back whether the game likes it or not. The specification is explicit: a page cannot swallow that key.

So a browser FPS spends its first ten seconds explaining itself, and can be interrupted by one keystroke at any moment after. A third-person or top-down shooter needs none of it β€” the cursor stays a cursor, and where it points is where you shoot. The genre went where the platform was easy, which is why the web is full of over-the-shoulder arenas and isometric arenas and side-view gunfights, and thin on the thing most people picture when they hear the word.

What the tag actually contains

Not everything, and we cut some of it.

Tags in this feed come from whoever uploaded the game, and five of these shooters are also tagged as dress-up, mahjong or match-three, which means somebody was carpet-bombing the tag box. Those are filtered out of the grid below, along with a handful of colouring and cooking games that had wandered in the same way.

What is left splits roughly three ways: online arenas where you are matched with strangers, sniper missions where you get one shot and a lot of waiting, and 2D gun games where the whole fight fits on one screen. The three are barely the same hobby. The arena is about movement, the sniper mission is about patience, and the 2D game is about reading an arc.

Choosing between them in ten seconds

If you have five minutes, take a 2D game β€” they start instantly and end cleanly.

If you have twenty, take an arena, because the first three rounds are you learning the map and the game only begins after that. A sniper mission is the one to avoid when you are impatient; it is designed around the wait, and rushing it is just missing repeatedly.

The four at the top are picked, not sorted: a multiplayer arena with a weapon list, a twenty-seven-gun deathmatch, a city sniper board, and a Wild West shootout that runs on a phone. Behind them the catalogue fills in from the shooter tags, minus the noise.

Questions people ask

Why do so few browser shooters use a first-person view?

Because hiding your mouse cursor on the web is a permission, not a setting. A page has to call the Pointer Lock API from a click, the browser shows a notice, and pressing Escape releases it β€” by specification, and the page is not allowed to stop it. Third-person and top-down views need none of that, so that is where the genre went. Of the six hundred and ten shooters here, eight are tagged first person.

My mouse keeps escaping the game window.

That is pointer lock ending. Click back inside the frame and it re-locks. If it drops constantly, it is usually another tab or an overlay stealing focus β€” full screen the game and it settles down.

Do these work on a phone?

Some do, and we mark which. But aiming is the whole skill and a thumb is a blunt instrument, so the honest answer is that shooters are the genre that loses the most in the move to touch. The ones that survive are the ones that aim for you and let you decide when to fire.

Are Funny Shooter 2, Time Shooter and Rooftop Snipers here?

No. Those three are among the most searched browser shooters on the web and none of them is in this catalogue. What is here is the rest of the genre β€” arenas, snipers, 2D gunfights and online deathmatch β€” and we would rather say so than let you find out four pages in.
